Romero's Aftermath [Game Review]
Game: Romero's Aftermath Genre: MMORPG Zombie Survival Horror Developer: Free Reign Entertainment Publisher: Free Reign Entertainment Copy supplied by Steam
Romero's Aftermath is a MMORPG zombie survival horror game developed and published by Free Reign Entertainment, the same creators of the infamous WarZ (a.k.a. Infestation: Survivor Stories).
GRAPHICS I wouldn't be surprised if most of the assets came directly from WarZ: the models are unpolished, the animations wonky, the cities and towns bland and the forests boring. The performance is also very bad, and I hardly ever got 60fps even at the lowest settings and resolution.
GAMEPLAY If you have played any other game of this genre, you know what you're getting: an open world with both zombies and human players, item and resource scavenging, crafting and overall survival. What this game does best is creating a huge map with many locations, a small amount of firearms and good food and water meters. But the rest is done terribly. The combat is broken, with even the worst melee weapon stunning a zombie instantly, and the crafting is nonsensical. Also going from one part of the map to the other is extremely boring, and an auto-run button is really needed, with some journeys taking even 20 minutes. Thankfully, the community is pretty great, and I've never been killed by another player that I encountered. But that isn't enough for saving a gameplay that is mostly unchanged from WarZ, and with even worse micro-transactions.
CHALLENGE The good aspect of this game is that your water and food meter will deplete very slowly, unlike other games in the genre. The bad aspect is that the zombies are way too easy to overpower, and you will probably die because you fell from somewhere or you went AFK for a couple of seconds.
SOUND For some reason, the zombie sounds are inconsistent and repetitive, if they even play at all: once I was surrounded by the most quiet zombie horde I've ever seen. The sound effects are also very weak and the main menu music is basically nonexistent.
REPLAYABILITY The best aspect of the game: you will spend a lot of time playing this game and trying to survive, but only if you are a fan of the genre, otherwise there is nothing special about it to make you come back.
Overall, even though the game is F2P, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone especially because you have to create another account and you might also have problems connecting to a server. Even as a fan of the genre, I was disappointed by the developers, who are also shutting down negative criticism and made some players pay 50$ to buy a F2P game.
